The Resurrection of a Racing Legend: Lotus Type 66 Unveiled

Have you ever experienced the joy of rediscovering something you thought was lost forever? Imagine stumbling upon plans for a Can-Am race car from the late 1960s that no one had ever seen before. That's precisely what happened to Clive Chapman, son of Lotus Cars founder Colin Chapman, in 2016. Unearthed from the depths of history, these plans have now given birth to the Lotus Type 66, a limited-edition racing car set to captivate the hearts of true Lotus enthusiasts.

The Can-Am Legacy:

The Canadian-American Challenge Cup series, spanning from 1966 to 1974, was a spectacle that left fans in awe. With powerhouse names like Porsche, McLaren, and Lola dominating the tracks, one notable absence was Lotus. Despite being at the forefront of Formula 1 innovation, Lotus never entered the Can-Am series. However, plans for a Lotus Can-Am car, the Type 66, were conceived in the late '60s but never realised due to the firm's heavy involvement in other racing categories.

The Rediscovery:

Fast forward to 2016, and Clive Chapman discovered the hidden plans for the Type 66 among 28 rolls of microfilm packed in a fireproof case. Partnering with Lotus' design director, Russell Carr, he transformed the drawings into 3D renders. Finally, in 2022, Lotus Advanced Performance seized the opportunity to turn this long-lost dream into reality.

Modernising History:

Geoff Ferris, the original draughtsman for Team Lotus, envisioned the Type 66 with 1960s technology. Today, the car retains its period features while embracing 21st-century engineering standards. The V8 engine, although modernized, pays homage to the thunderous power of its predecessors. The design incorporates cues from the iconic Type-72 F1 car, making the Type 66 a contemporary homage to Lotus' racing legacy.

Specifications and Performance:

Limited to only 10 production cars, the Type 66 boasts a track-only specification adhering to original design drawings. With a kerb weight below 950kg, 830 bhp, and a top speed exceeding 180 mph, it promises an unrivaled driving experience. Customers can choose from two color schemes reminiscent of Gold Leaf Team Lotus or the JPS livery from the '70s and '80s.

Track Programs and Legacy:

Owners of the Type 66 will be invited to join Classic Team Lotus' annual track program, further enhancing the experience of owning this piece of racing history. Clive Chapman expresses his excitement, stating that fulfilling the Type 66 project 53 years on will create excitement of the highest level.

The Lotus Type 66 represents more than just a revived dream; it's the resurrection of a racing legend. With modern technology, engineering excellence, and a nod to the past, this limited-edition track car embodies the spirit of Lotus' racing heritage, promising an exhilarating experience for the fortunate few who get to own and drive it.
